New Patient Exams
New patients must undergo a comprehensive dental assessment during their initial appointment. During this procedure, your mouth is checked for potential signs of dental issues.
Routine dental checkups take only 20 minutes and can be completed quickly, while a thorough oral evaluation may take an hour or more to complete.
Comprehensive dental exams are much more detailed. They give your dentist a complete insight into your oral health status and help decide if deep cleanings or sealants are necessary.
What to Expect During Comprehensive Oral Exams:
- Check for damaged, weakened, or missing teeth
- Examine them for cavities or signs of them.
- Look for signs of inflammation or problems on your tongue, inner cheeks, and roof of the mouth
- Monitor existing dental work such as crowns
- A full examination of your gums and jawbones
- Assessing your bite for spaces between teeth and alignment issues
- Examining your jaw joint or full TMJ exam
- Dental x-rays or imaging scans
- Aesthetic exams
- Check for signs of oral cancer, such as bumps and sores; examine any irregular growths or lumps; and discuss your medical and oral health history with the healthcare provider.
Once your comprehensive oral exam is complete, your dentist can create a treatment plan tailored to meet your individual requirements.
Your dentist needs all the information possible about both your oral health and general wellness, so they can best meet your needs. Don’t be afraid to express any worries or inquiries; make sure they know if:
- Do you suffer from dental anxiety or fear?
- Smoke cigarettes?
- Have a medical condition?
You might need medications if:
- You are pregnant, trying, or planning to become pregnant.
- You have allergies.
- You notice irregularities in your mouth.
- You have increased tooth sensitivity.
- You find that your jaw muscles are often sore.
