All about same-day crowns

A crown or (cap) is a cover that fits over a tooth that has been damaged by decay, broken, root canal treated, badly stained or misshapen. A crown looks and feels like a natural tooth and restores the strength and function of your tooth. CEREC same-day crowns require no impressions. We will design and create your crown and permanently bond it to your tooth all in one visit. No temporary crowns required!

What are the advantages of same-day crowns?

Before the technology came around, getting a crown took 2 to 3 appointments and required a notoriously uncomfortable temporary crown. Thanks to new techniques and equipment, getting your crown is easier than ever.

Same-day crowns offer the following extra advantages:
  • No messy impressions. We use a highly accurate and comfortable digital 3D scan.
  • Complete treatment in as little as one visit.
  • Less drilling required. We can preserve more of your natural tooth structure.

Same-day crown treatment

Examining and preparing the tooth

During the appointment, we will examine your tooth. If the tooth is affected by decay, we will remove the damaged areas and clean it. If your tooth has stress fractures, a crown will help protect the tooth from breaking along the fracture. Then we will shape your natural tooth so the crown fits comfortably overtop.

Your crown custom made on site

Once your tooth has been prepared, we’ll use a 3D scanner to take a highly accurate digital scan of your tooth. We no longer require impressions or the use of trays. This 3D scan is used to create a digital model of your new crown. Your porcelain crown is made while you wait with our in-house machine.

Placement and polish

Your new crown will be bonded or cemented in place right away. No second appointment or temporary crown is needed. Your dentist will make a few final adjustments and ask how it feels to make sure it’s a perfect fit. After a final polish, your new crown is ready to go!

The cost of same-day crowns in Toronto

The out-of-pocket cost for a dental crown can vary widely from patient to patient. With a typical insurance plan a single crown averages out to about $200 to $600+. Without insurance a reasonable ball-park figure for a crown would be about $800 to $1200 and up. To get your mouth looking and feeling normal again, most people feel that a dental crown is an easy decision but the cost may still give you pause..

So what goes into determining the cost of a crown?
  • The type of crown that is needed.
  • The location and complexity of the procedure.
  • The number of crowns that may be required.
  • Combining crowns and other dental appliances like bridges.
  • Supplies and equipment that are required for your specific treatment.

Remember, no dental practice can provide an accurate quote over the phone. Ultimately, your needs are as unique as your smile. It’s important to speak with a dentist and undergo an oral exam to find out all your treatment options and to receive an accurate quote. If you have dental insurance, we would be happy to supply you with a quote to submit to them so you can find out your out-of-pocket costs before you make a decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Needing a crown after a root canal depends highly on the location of the tooth in the mouth—teeth towards the back of the mouth like molars and premolars are needed more for chewing, and generally require crowns, where incisors or canines which aren't needed for chewing don't always require crowns.
One difference between a crown vs filling is that in a crown is much more durable on a biting surface. Repeated pressure from chewing or from habitual clenching can cause fillings on the biting surfaces of molars to chip or come loose. A crown, being a single unbroken surface from gumline to gumline, is designed to take much more force over a longer period of time.
Dental crowns play two important roles in your mouth. First and foremost, they completely restore the function of your tooth which means you can close your teeth and chew without pain or discomfort or without having to compensate by chewing on one side. Secondarily (but also important!) crowns are designed to blend in with your natural teeth. That means they are coloured and contoured to match your aesthetic. In fact, sometimes people forget altogether which tooth is the crown.
A post isn’t quite a dental implant (which is surgically implanted in the jaw bone) but it is exactly what it sounds like: a medical-grade post that may be cemented into a prepared root-canal to reinforce the base and core of a dental crown. Dental posts are only used if there isn’t enough healthy tooth left over to reliably hold a crown.
Depending on the state of your tooth, getting a crown can feel a bit like getting a filling. We take our time to patiently numb the area and then use freezing as necessary so the preparation of your tooth isn’t painful. You may feel a little sensitivity or some soreness in the gums around the tooth for a short period of time following your procedure. If you feel anxious about visiting the dentist, let us know! We would love to put your mind at ease and make your experience as comfortable as possible.
In most cases, dental crowns can last up to 15 years. However, if they are properly maintained, they can last for 25-30 years.
A dental crown is maintained just like a natural tooth. Regular brushing and flossing keep your dental crown - and the supporting gum around it - healthy and clean. Regular cleanings and checkups at your dentist are essential to your oral health.

I cannot recommend Dr. Grant Yiu and his staff enough. Truly wonderful people that happen to be amazing at their jobs, so professional but so comfortable at the same time. Somehow it is a beautiful mix of clean and cozy at a dental office??!! I am not the best at the dentist and always seem to revert into a 12 year old’s pain threshold, had my first pretty serious dental work (crown) and was almost literally, hand held through the whole experience. I’m stuck with them for life and forever grateful I needed emergency dental work.

I normally find myself at Little Italy Dentistry every 4-6 months for a stellar cleaning with the incredibly friendly and detailed hygienist, Erin. This time, when I found myself with a tooth emergency, the front desk staff got me in to see Dr. Yiu faster than an Ontario driver in a school zone. Both Dr. Yiu and dental assistant Claire immediately calmed my nerves, conducted a thorough exam, determined the problem and patched me right up. Whether it's for a simple routine cleaning or something more serious, I trust the team at Little Italy Dentistry. Plus, they have the good mouthwash; not the burny stuff, or the poison that turns your mouth into a desert landscape. My outside bones have never felt so good!
